In order to fully appreciate this little conversation I am posting below, you need to know that I was at my local grocery store and literally standing in between the clerk and the assistant manager as they shared this exchange.
CLERK: She got some of that iced coffee, but it's not scanning. Do you know how much it is?
ASSISTANT MANAGER: Ummm....no I don't.
(brief pause, then clerk just pounds in a few numbers,)
ASSISTANT MANANGER: Just charge her 99 cents.
CLERK: I just charged her $1.99.
ASSISTANT MANAGER: Great, that'll work.
Then I'm just standing there, mouth gapping open in shock, looking at the clerk then back at the assistant manager. As soon as the assistant manager, the clerk had the same look and whispered to me that she would just charge me the 99 cents.
In spite of that, I was still shocked. And not because I mind paying the extra buck. It is, after all, just a buck. But, shocked because the assistant manager is just ballparking prices and willing to accept charing a customer, I don't know, DOUBLE. So, readers, tell me what you think about this.

I just want you to know, this is exactly how I would run the store if I were in charge...that should tell you something about their current management. To be more specific--that they are lazy.
sounds like those two are lazy...but for the asst mgr to say 'great. that'll work' for 1.99 after saying just to charge you .99 is ridiculous. my husband actually is a grocery store manager, and i can tell you that this whole scene would not go over well with him if he saw it!
ballparking behind my back, possibly I can tolerate cos i wont know about it, but doing it in front of the customer is a new one: had he no sense of shame...
I can say that I'm pretty sure I know exactly where you were....I can't stand that place anymore! No one has common sense these days!
Were you in my town? Because that's how we roll at the local Brookshires around here...

That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard, I mean really what the hell. Lame-o's to the max.
Were you at that one place? You know? Where they let the children/cashiers run wild, talk on their cell phones, refuse to carry out your groceries? That kind of stuff makes me crazy. I mean, it's ok if you get a great deal out of it, but to range from $.99 all the way up to $1.99- not acceptable.
EVERYONE. AT. MYLOCAL. PIGGLYWIGGLY. ISINSAAAAAANE.
I only shop there still because we've no Target on this godforsaken mountain and I can't stomach Wal-Mart terribly often.
That never happens to me because the teens they hire at my local grocery store can't speak or make direct eye contact. What I loved recently was when I used my frequent shopper card to get a bottle of wine, marked down from 10.99 to 8.99 and it rang up 89.99...and then it took half an hour to correct and no one apologized for wasting my time...sheesh.
How funny, this same thing happened to me, cept the cashier didnt ask for a price...I got a 12 pk of the liption green tea with citrus...she charged me a 1.50 since it wasnt ringing up. Hell I wasnt gonna bitch bout that one!! Score one for the home team.
